Its almost been 4 months since we started living off rescued food. Given our full cupboards and fridge, and with only 2 months to go, it’s safe to say we aren’t worried about going hungry. However, we are very much looking forward to finishing and going back to our zero waste shopping lifestyle that we adopted in The Clean Bin Project.

Mostly, we look forward to not having to taste test everything before we indulge. We always have to have a sniff or take a tiny bite and determine if is ok before we tuck in because much of the food we have is very close to or just past the expiry date.

What we’ve found interesting is how our senses have been able to tell if something is off. Before the project we hadn’t used that skill, but I think it’s innate. Last week I found a few cases of cookies; the oils had broken down, and they were rancid. It was obvious from one sniff. I emptied each bag into the city compost pickup and recycled the packaging. At least they didn’t go to the landfill.

Almost all of the food we have saved has been fine. Milk 18 days past expiry: still good. Chocolate straws 2 years past best by: delicious. We are just looking for to skipping the taste test once we reach the finish line.
